What is Bergamot?

Bergamot is one of the essential oils used in Living Light Candles so we thought you might be interested to read a little about what bergamot is and where it comes from.

ย

ย

Bergamot's distinct fragrance has been used by European perfumers since the beginning of the 18th century and it was a component of the original Eau de Cologne.

ย

If you recognise its fresh citrus notes then you won't be surprised to hear that it is sourced from a variety of sour lemon. The oil is found in tiny quantities under the peel of the fruit, one fruit will yield less than 1 gram of essential oil.

ย

The oil is a complex mixture of chemicals and including volatile organic compounds. If you want to see for yourself the oils found in a citrus peel, take a piece of orange peel and look at its surface closely as you fold it in half โ€“ you should see tiny explosions of oil. Taking this one stage further you can try to ignite the aromatic oils holding a match by the peel as you fold it... a handy trick for infusing zesty fragrances into your cocktails!

ย

It's not just about the scent ... bergamot is also used for its flavour; it gives the characteristic flavour to Earl Grey Tea and in Italy is also used in marmalade.

ย

It makes the perfect addition to our Lemon Bergamot Essential Oil Fragrance.
